Time for Fireworks?

February 2, 2008

Greetings all….we’ve set up this blog to get your comments on reunion planning for the fiftieth reunion in 2010.   It’ll be here sooner than you know…..just as our 70th birthday—either here or approaching—leaves many of saying, “How’d that happen?”

So let’s start: What makes a good fiftieth reunion?  Is it the setting, the parties, the dinner, how you look, how we look, the chance to sit and chat?  What should we emphasize?

Class of 1960! Add your comments here; let us know what’s important to you about our fiftieth reunion.

what’s important for our 50th? times and places to sit and chat with friends. and good dance music from the fifties — whether we actually dance (some of us will) or just sit and tap our feet. but keep the two separate enough that those immersed in talking do not need to shout.

any interest in a “field trip” to one of the state parks or perhaps the Corning Glass Museum?

    Early questions/comments about reunion:
    1. Three classmates of mine want to attend for their first time! They have concerns: where will our class of 60 be lodged? Is there air conditioning? Are the rooms as good as the ‘apartments’ at the edge of north campus have been?
    2. Relatives of mine, class of 1958, suffered last June (2008) in the heat when their main class dinner was in un-air conditioned Barton Hall, and the ethnic dinner their class chose was of very low quality. Sometimes the old standbys for menus are best.
    3. Will we be able to specify or request names of those we would like to be lodged near?
Thanks for any guidance on these.

I’m posting these responses by Sue Day to the questions raised above, her words are in quotes and bold text.
Three classmates of mine want to attend for their first time! They have concerns: where will our class of 60 be lodged? “For the past 5 years or so the 50th has been housed the The Mews/ Court/Balch area just beyond Dickson and Donlon. These were built in 2001 and are in good condition. The class will get its Official notice in September.” Is there air conditioning? “Yes” Are the rooms as good as the ‘apartments’ at the edge of north campus have been? “Are you talking about the Townhouses? In many ways they are much better… closer to campus, newer. Buses should connect us to campus as well.”2. Relatives of mine, class of 1958, suffered last June (2008) in the heat when their main class dinner was in un-air conditioned Barton Hall, and the ethnic dinner their class chose was of very low quality. “We want to keep reunion costs reasonable but quality is very important, too. Bill Fisher has been in charge of food for the past 20 years at our reunions and I think you would agree he has done a fine job. There are very few places on campus that accommodate a 50th reunion class for meals. Weather is so unpredictable. Reunion 2009 was quite cool and everyone bundled up. Barton never had a chance to get hot during the day. Renting huge portable air conditioners is extremely expensive for Barton.” Sometimes the old standbys for menus are best.
      3. Will we be able to specify or request names of those we would like to be lodged near? “’59 was able to pre register people near friends this year and we expect to do so as well.”
